Shar Johnson

As a native of Brooklyn, New York, I was first introduced to the Arts in my father's church. The Spirit of Christ Baptist Church (still in Brooklyn) and Youth Choir was the beginning. I was later exposed to a grassroots community organization known as The Heritage House, located in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, U.S.A. It was there that African American History, Cultural Arts, and spirituality began to blend together and form creative thoughts within me. While earning my B.A. at Cheyney University I studied theatre and learn to perform proficiently and skillfully. "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf" is a legendary stage play written by Ntozake Shange in 1975. The play was an adaptation of life as an African-American woman in the United States during the Civil Rights Movement. Acting as the main character, Red, was the most challenging and liberating experience I have had. It infused me with the passion and respect I now have for the Performing Arts. Other performances, such as The Savannah’s Blues (original work), The Wiz, All About Love, I Am My Sister’s Keeper Part I & II (original work), Trusting God (original work), A Christmas Gift, soon followed. Since migrating to Maryland, I have performed at the historical Arena Players Theatre and at various church circuits including my place of worship, St. Stephens A.M.E Church. Our leader is the Pastor William A Gray, III. November 2009 was the birth of NLP Drama Ministry. In 2009 I wrote, “Dancing Through the Storm”. In 2010 I wrote, directed, and produced, "It’s the God in Me". In April, 2011 I wrote, directed, and produced "Do As I Say, Not as I Do". I am currently in production with my Third play under Next Level Productions called, “2 Wrongs Don’t Make it Right!”. Showtimes are April 27 & 28, 2013. I am also writing my next play, "I Feel Like Bustin' Lose!". God bless!
